Office of the State Auditor
The South Carolina Office of the State Auditor is a professional governmental organization very similar to a large CPA firm. The Office is responsible for the performance of audits and agreed-upon procedure engagements of State agencies and of cost reports filed by institutional providers of Medicaid services throughout South Carolina. Additional responsibilities include the performance of an annual financial audit of the Basic Financial Statements of the State of South Carolina and a statewide audit of the various Federal programs administered by State agencies as required by the Single Audit Act Amendments of 1996. The Office also provides assistance to the Attorney General, the State Law Enforcement Division, and the U.S. Attorney regarding investigations involving financial misappropriations.

Position Summary for Entry Level Auditor
Under direct supervision, the Auditor assists in audits and engagements of fiscal activities of State agencies and/or institutions to determine the fairness of financial statements, compliance with State and Federal laws, and the allowability of reported costs of Medicaid providers. The Auditor will learn to apply accounting and auditing skills while working as part of a team on a variety of engagements.
Starting Salary
$35,800
Qualifications and Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or finance. Undergraduate degree must include 24 credit hours of accounting courses, 12 of which must be junior-level courses or above. Only applicants with good academic performance will be considered.
- Ability to use personal computers to prepare workpapers and summarize results of review and testing of books and records of auditees.
- General knowledge of principles and practices of accounting and auditing.
- Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors and auditees.
- Must be able and willing to travel overnight up to four nights per week and provide own transportation to the audit site. This position involves 15-30% in state, overnight travel.
- A valid driver’s license, good driving record and reliable transportation.
- Must reside within commuting distance to Columbia.
